Peachy Pelaez-Reyes passes away
Maria Elena “Peachy” Pelaez-Reyes, 65, passed away on April 16, 2012. She was Philippine Director of Tourism in San Francisco, California from 1987 to 1999. Peachy as she is fondly called is survived by her husband, Dr. Frank Reyes, children and grand-children. She was the eldest daughter of Ambassador and former Vice-President Emmanuel Perez and Edith Fabella. For her pioneering spirit in holding the first Filipino community event in San Francisco, the Philippine Islands Fair and Expo in 1988, the Philippine American Press Club honored her with the Torch Bearer Award on December 2011.
There will be two services for her as follows:
Thursday, 19 April, 6.30 pm at St. Bartholomew's Church in San Mateo
Prayer Mass hosted by St. Bartholomew's Filipino Ministry Saturday, 21 April, 2.00 pm at St. Bartholomew's Church in San Mateo
Memorial Mass, with Celebration of Life immediately following in St. Bartholomew's Auditorium In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the National Brain Tumor Society http://www.braintumor.org/ or the Emmanuel Pelaez Foundation (email Naomi Olano at naomiolano@yahoo.com).

Asian Heritage Street Celebration and Target Honors Bay Area Educators on May 21
The public is invited to come celebrate six Bay Area educators who have been selected as finalists in the Asian Heritage Street Celebration School Awards for their commitment to the future generation of Asian Pacific Americans. A ceremony recognizing all of the Asian American nominees will take place inside the Asian Art Museum’s Samsung Hall at noon. Admission to the Asian Art Museum will be free all day, sponsored by Target.
The finalists are: Ellen Chu, Educator, Jefferson Early Education; Sophie Lee, Principal, Sunset Elementary School; Irene Collier, Educator, Presidio Middle School; Koichi Charles Sano, Educator, Abraham Lincoln High School; May Choi, Counselor, Lowell High School; Hang Le To, Director, Vietnamese Cultural Center.
The program will also feature a musical performance by San Francisco students, and an all day AHSC Student Art Show featuring works from the finalists’ schools. Light refreshments will be served.
Nominations were submitted by principals, teachers, and parents throughout the month of April and the finalists were selected by the AHSC’s School Committee. Four winners will be presented with glass plaques and $250 Target gift cards.
The award ceremony is part of the annual School Awards Program that the AHSC has hosted since its inception, to recognize the accomplishments of students and teachers who are of Asian Pacific Islander heritage in categories not typically celebrated. In the past, students and teachers have been honored for community service, visual and performing arts, green science, and nutrition while teachers were honored for their work in athletics.

Free Health Services and Consultation at AHSC Healthy Living Pavilion
For the second year in a row, the Asian Heritage Street Celebration will feature a health section entitled Healthy Living Pavilion. This area of the street fair will comprise of many community health groups and sponsor booths that will collectively promote health and wellness. The Healthy Living Pavilion, which will be located on Larkin Street between Fulton and McAllister, will include a variety of free and low-cost health services, professional medical advice and health-related educational material for the community.
Hepatitis B Screenings and Education
To spread awareness of hepatitis B, which affects 1 in 10 Asian and Pacific Islanders, the fair will offer free educational brochures, hepatitis B screenings and MD consultations. This section is a collective effort by California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC), Subaru, Brown & Toland Physicians, Gilead, Onyx Pharmaceutical, Genentech, and Bristol Myers Squibb.

Family Support Services
Educational material on disaster preparedness, hosted by the Red Cross, in addition to a variety of other family support services will be available to the public at the fair.
Health Education
In addition to hepatitis B education, the community will have access to free educational material and advice about various health concerns.
Survey Passport
A wide array of prizes is in store for those interested in a fun, interactive way to learn about health education. In order to collect prizes, fair-goers must use a Survey Passport to record their answers to questions located at several booths. Upon completion of this Survey Passport, individuals will have the opportunity to fill out a raffle card to win an Apple IPAD sponsored by Subaru! Ask Your Doctor Public Health Forum
One of the newest features of this year’s health section will be the “Ask Your Doctor Public Health Forum.” From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., fair-goers will be able to ask health-related questions to a panel of certified medical doctors, most of whom are general practitioners.
